Default Bouncing ext. processors vs Recording to Tracks

Hey-

I've read this in the manual, but can't seem to get my brain around the issue. I have but one outboard compressor and was playing around with compressing the snare track. I've got six drum tracks for the kit. I want to process the snare and bring it back into the session compressed, in a newly recorded file.

I haven't been able to get the new track to appear in the session window after the Bounce to Disk, and when I drag it in from the regions list it is out of sync.

I've read about the Recording to Tracks option, but suspect that it does not compensate for the delay.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated-

Mr PC

I"m not sure where the bounce to disk is coming in, but that's certainly not what you want to be doing if you're trying to post-process a track using outboard gear. Basically you need to set the output of your snare to whatever output is feeding the compressor. Then come back into ProTools on a new audio track on whatever input your compressor's output is connected to. Record enable the new track and away you go! You'll definitely get some noticable latency (delay) on your new track, but that's unavoidable, so you just need to edit and line up the new track to be back in time with the song (using the old one as a guide) and you'll be good to go.

Thanks for the replies. I was using Bounce to Disk because I thought that it would compensate for the latency. I'll try your method, Slim, which seems to be the Record to Track way.

Nerd, I live in Clifton on Ludlow Ave. I play in a band called Goose and I'm in Len's Lounge as well. Maybe I've seen you in a music store or something----

i'm not sure about your configuration, but it seems you are trying to make an external insert to your snare channel. if that's the case, you need to have an i/o pair dedicated to that insert point; in other words, for example, if you output analog channel 1 you need to input analog channel 1 as well. and if your external comp can "see" the signal while playback, you should be able to bounce it too.

if it just doesn't work, you can always spend precious audio tracks and record another snare track as someone suggested already. the benefit of that is being able to a/b compare the two takes.

but why you want to use external comp? because there are good plugs available, i'm guessing you have a killer device in your rack

Well, I have a device, I'm not sure about "killer". I would love to have the Bomb Factory classic compressor set ($$$$). I'm using a Summit Audio TLA-50. I'm experimenting now, putting compression on drums. I will try one of the included Digi compressors, and setting up the insert as you describe. Thanks for the info--
