Default Computer crashes when playing audio

Hi my cousin is using a Mac g-3 blue & white. 400mhz proc, 640mb of pc100 ram, and 1 9gb scsi-2 hard drive. He has the digi 001 & PTLE 5.3.1. Whenever he records more than 8 tracks with multiple effects (rtas) on each track his system slows up to the point of stopping. What he wants to do is have 24 tracks with alot of room for effects. (HE IS USING AUDIO NOT MIDI)What component is slowing things up? And would purchasing a new pc or mac solve the problem? If so why? Is is just a matter of proccessing power? Or frontside bus? Or could it be solved by getting a new scsi hard drive? Obviously we would opt for the most cost effective solution. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Try a formating the system drive and re-installing the Operating system. Make sure to backup before you do this.

How many effects are you using? If it is the same effect for multiple tracks, make a BUS and point those tracks to it. Save Processing power, uses one track and that way and you do not have to insert the plug-ins for each track. Plus you have great fade control with the effect. Try that for each effect before you go out and buy a new machine. Generally speaking if you have effects on each track, you are eating up Processor speed and essentially killing your machine. Then it locks up due to not having anything else to use.

Hope that makes sense. Look into using buses for tracks using the same effects....

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">It's called Macaplasia. YOu need more processing power. YOu can upgrade to a powerful PC now for around 500.00 that will get you 32 tracks and 5 effects on each track for a total of 160 effects. Reverbs eat more CPU power than other effects and will affect the results significantly.
