Are HDX cards best way to get most power for PTHD ? Have new MacBook Pro and want most powerful HDProTools 12.7 system I can using that computer , so are two HDX cards best option in Magma expansion chassis to use with the new MacBook Pro as I get rid of my 12 core old and long in the tooth Mac Pro trash can model over three years old ? Seems HDX cards kind of long in the tooth also but possible this is still best ? Any help with advice would be greatly appreciated , thanks in advance . Got a USB C to thunderbolt dongle to hook up the magma but will be going from 64 gig of ram in my old trash can MacPro to only 16 gig in my 2016 MacBook but more portable and don't have to always carry monitor in bags .

What sort of power are you looking to improve? There is no way that your mac book will be more powerful than your 12 core mac pro. More portable but certainly not more powerful! Are you wanting more instruments? Or more voices? Until the new Mac Pro comes out, you have the most powerful game in town.

HDX is the best way to get very low latency and high simultaneous I/O count.

To mix large projects you need as many cores as you can get at the highest speed.

Without knowing the:

• scale of work
• the plugin suite (AAX-DSP ready? willing to invest to make it so?)
• whether you're primarily recording studio capturing live performances of multi piece bands( orchestras?)
• a mix/mastering house
• the size of your mixes
• Stereo or Surround
• general focus of your work
• etc

It's pretty difficult to offer any comparable experience.

The comments already provided are generally true - going from a Mac Pro (Trashcan or 2010/2012) to a MBP is a big downgrade in Native processing potential. If you are determined to do so, then yeah - adding DSP (HDX/UAD) is going to help provide more raw processing capability (and dual benefit of HDX is lower latency for recording).

Separating out the Native Processing puzzle for a moment - DSP. There are various "faiths" represented on the DUC - some worship at the DSP altar, others protest the mere mention of DSP (this is an exaggeration of course - for illustrative purposes).

For me - I look at the subject (on May 2,2017) much like I look at Graphics Cards today in computers. Today you have a choice of onboard graphics processing via Intel's chips set (native processing equivalent) or GPUs (DSP Processing). For me personally (on May 2, 2017), I cannot imagine - actually I could not complete - my current projects without 2 UAD Octos and 2 HDX cards in my 2012 Mac Pro 12 core (see sig). I max out my 2 HDX Cards, max out my Octos and hit 70%+ on my 12 core. So for me - I'm DSP all the way (and simultaneously - I have a second CPU processing linked in via VEP6 - MBP running an i7 at 2.7GHz 16GB Ram, etc)

I do have friends who record and mix much simpler music, and they're fine with a 6core 2010 Mac Pro, running an Omni and PT HD - all native.

Long roundabout way of illustrating the vastly different capabilities that your work demands of your HW choices.

Answer some questions for yourself before you shed your TrashCan ... it may save you some cash and some headaches ...

How do you run 4 PCIe cards in a Mac Pro? I can only run 1 Octo and 2 HDX, plus the graphics card in mine...
