Mbox2 preamp & Shure SM57

Hi - Recording in Pro Tools 11. I'm using a Shure SM57 mic to record a guitar amp. Is the MBox2 enough or do I need a preamp also? The mic sounds way too quiet.

Assuming you are using a straight xlr-xlr cable, it should be fine. Typically, an SM57 is placed right on the speaker grill and I would start at the spot where the cone and dustcap meet(adjust for tone).

Yes, thanks, done that Eric. It's not peaking even when I turn the gain to around 3/4 full but it's recordable at least.

Well you don't want it to PEAK, but you should certainly just start to hit 'yellow' on the PT meters. Just turn the gain up. You won't hurt anything.

Thanks Eric, all seems to be going fine now (apart from having problems reducing amp buzz while recording...grrr...)

Humbuckers or single coils? In my room, if I play a strat or tele, I need to turn my entire body around to find the angle with the least buz
