Default Plextor CDRW prices

SO o thought I would share my shopping with the group. I'm planing on purchasing a Plextor Ext. SCSI2 8x/2x/20x CDRW for my ProTools CD-r mixes.

This is what I found
Plextor MFG P/Number; PX-W8220TE/SW
373.95 buycomp.com AKA Buy.com
374.99 computers4sure.com
419.95 nextdirect.necx.com
430.99 egghead.com
423.81 Pcpoint.com

I'm sure shipping, handeling, service and delivery may vary Greatly even on the same part number. Any suggestions?

Do you really need the re-write capability considering media is so cheap? If not you can save money by buying the 8X write/20X read unit by Plextor. I can't recall the model number at this time, but this is the route I'm probably going to take. My only problem is I haven't been able to find this unit in an external configuration, and I'm not so sure about replacing the bootable internal Apple CDROM.

Does anyone know whether the Plextor 8220 (CDRW) is as reliable as the 820? The prices seemed to have reversed. i.e. the 830 ext is higher than the 8220 ext.

Any thoughts?

But it sure helps when you have to quickly burn a CD ROM and you want to have Toast verifying the integrity of the freshly burnt data . . .

BTW: I have the 8/2/20 and it rocks!

Try looking fro the 820 Plex at the online shops I listed above. I 'm pretty sure I saw the drive you were looking for.

Good point about the re-write thing but I would like to treat CD-RW like a cassette for pre mix and recording band practice.

A higher read speed wouldn't really be my priority in a ProTools Station CD-R. Game station? Unless your ripping music off of Audio CD's all the time. ALA Puffy.

Protools4,
Have you had luck playing a cdrw on a standard cd player? I saw your comment about using cdr as a cassette for pre-mix & recording band practice. I was hoping to do the same, but have not found a cd player that could read them.

Thanks Tad. I found the 820x for $343 at buy.com like you suggested, however pricewatch.com was high.

PT4...when the orders come in off the website (hargh!) I have to burn like a mad dog!

Do you know if I can use the writer (Plextor) on my 8100 Nubus - running Masterlist 1.4.1 - but I have the 2.0 version too?

Thank you

GSS

4 Update Me...

Do you have fast SCSI built-in like the 8600 or a NUBUS SCSI card?

Since it is SCSI it will always (?) be backwards compatible. The Plextor can operate at Ultra speeds (20mBs) correct?

You would just run at (5mBs) if you don't have the fast built-in or a NUBUS card

Beggehorn,

I think you right I could have Huge problems with audio CD-RWS. Not to mention the slow speed, price difference of CD-r Vs.CDRW and cost of media.

Shaggy,
Let me know if you get it fight away during these holidays. I'm thinking of goiing the same route.
