Default G4 SCSI Drives

I plan on purchasing a new G4 and the 001 sometime in the next month or so. I'm wondering what I should do about drive selection.

Evidently, Digi doesn't support the SCSI card that Apple offers. Are there any comments that anyone can offer regarding performance of the system with the new Ultra ATA66 drives vs an expensive 3rd party SCSI upgrade?

Also, does anyone know if Digi plans on offering a patch or something so the new Apple SCSI card can be used? I'd really rather pay the $350 extra and get the Apple supported SCSI card and an 18GB drive than turn my machine into an expensive compatibility nightmare.

Starchy,

I'd go with the MAXTOR 27gig ATA/66- $220 at buy.com. Set the jumpers to "slave" and four screw turns later you are cooking.

What about a mixture of SCSI and ATA? Is it possible to run my system and ProTools LE off of a SCSI drive and record onto the Ultra ATA?

I know that Digi recommends a dedicated drive for music - would this configuration work?

This should work. I don't recall whether we tested this configuration, but I don't see any reason why it won't work.

Steve,
Why do some SCSI devices like the plextor 820 cause a system freeze when powered-off and others don't? Is there a setting in Smart SCSI?
