Default New S3 Crashes computer when ethernet is plugged in [solved]

Mac Mini 2Ghz 4 Core i7 (Server) Mid 2011
Mac OS 10.9.5

Bought an S3 for this system today. If I plug an ethernet cable in between the mac and the S3, the Mac freezes and restarts. I have tried 7 diffewrent cables and even 2 cross-over cables. I also tried both the ports on the S3.I can plug any other network into the port of the Mac Mini and it works fine.

If I ad a thunderbolt - ethernet adapter and plug the ethernet between that and the S3, then I can connect to the S3, but the Network device browser does not pick it up - so no AVB - rest seams to work. I managed to update the firmware of the S3 this way, but this is the only port that will connect to the S3.

Can anyone shed some light?

Maybe the S3 is in Live mode? Just a thought... must be in "Studio" mode

Thanks for the reply!
The S3 is in Studio mode. I can use it on the thunderbolt ethernet port, it just does not work on the built in port.
I re-installed OS 10.9.5 in the hope that soemthing was hogging the port on the mac, but it changed nothing. I can use that port for network and SNS iSCSI without issue, but as soon as I plug the S3 in the computer crashes and restarts by itself - if I keep the S3 plugged in - the computer will juste keep on freezing and restarting like it is in a loop...

I had heard from Kyle I believe that on a Mac Pro at least - there is no AVB available on a 2012 and below.

Why don't you submit a support case to ask them to help you figure it out?

A freeze and restart? Do you get a crash screen on the Mac? What exactly happens? What is the system log/system crash reports in Console.app showing? A driver related OS X crash/panic is something very specific you want to be clear about if it is happening.

The simple rule to remember that to have AVB support a Mac also needs Thunderbolt (there is no direct technical link, it's just how Apple released stuff). This is pure Apple AVB support related, nothing to do with Avid or the S3. So this Thunderbolt equipped Mac Mini supports AVB.

I expect (but you should check) the Apple Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter should support AVB, third party adapters who knows.

Lots of troubleshooting worth trying, including checking OS X and driver compatibility, disable any unneeded network crap like firewalls in OS X, and testing with a full clean OS X install, starting with just getting the AVB device to show up in audio/midi setup.

You said you did a clean OS X reinstall. But what else did you reinstall? Install nothing else *at all*, no DAW, no apps, no drivers (no AVB drivers needed with 10.9) and see if it works. No not use system migration assistant or time machine to restore anything, just a complete new OS X install.... And test.

Thank you for all the replies.

It just crashed the computere hard - as in the computer went straight into a restart routine. I upgraded to Yosemite - which stopped the crashing, but the S3 will not work on the computers ethernet port. As in not at all - it is not seen / regocniezed and obviously no AVB. It can only be used as a controller when plugged into a Thunderbolt to ethernet hub, but then also no AVB. It also has one dead fader already...:) (thats after about 2 hours of usage!
I started with a fresh install on Yosemite - as in format the drive and install system, then protools 12.5.2 and eucon 3.4.
If I go to system prefs it says nothing is connected to the ethernet port...
Eucon have both the thunderbolt and USB3 port on its dropdown menu - but never the built in EThernet port.
Daryll - I have been through all of those suggestions, and the Macmini with thunderbolt is supposed to have AVB (certainly available as an option under "hardware" in the ethernet port setup under system prefs.) but we are not even there yet - I just need to get the Eucon to actually "see" the port...

Thanks
Stef

Update:

Its working. I did a smc reset and also switched the ethernet hardware to "Automatic" I am not sure which one corrected the problem - but I have it working on the built in Ethernet slot with AVB working well (so far) :)

Now just the bloody fader.
