Recording audio for music video
I do remote recording and usually get a feed from the board but I will be doing a music video this week and have a few questions
They want a mix with separate tracks to sync and edit later Will Condenser mics will be a problem Even with the different patterns I will get a lot of bleed as the band will be playing live (they are acoustic) Should I use dynamics and if I do should I still lug my rack with all the preamp's. I record in a studio with this gear all the time but never used it on a live band in a stage setting with no baffles or stuff to seperate the sounds Some record audio for music videos? Re: Recording audio for music video
I'm no expert, but if it's truly a music video, there's no recording, only playback of the song (already recorded) through a PA type speaker, and the band just lip syncs and fakes their playing, often repeatedly as different angles are shot.
Is it truly a music video, or more like a live concert video (which sounds more like what you're describing)? |

Re: Recording audio for music video
yes, standard music video production is the band air playing to a recording of the song(s) and in a lot of cases the song is striped with time code and the TC is sent to a large TC reader onset http://denecke.com/Products/products.html?tpm=1_2#
also if there is a frame-rate change like the old days of shooting 24FPS film them converting to 23.976/29.97 video the 0.1% pull would be applied to the onset playback so the bands movements would be in sync with the original speed of the song after TK

Re: Recording audio for music video
Thanks for that information. I have seen that done before.
They are doing a low budget video that is really just high end camera filming them play. Would you use condensers or dynamic? |

Re: Recording audio for music video
I would not, not use condensers.
There are a lot of variables to consider; how loud are they, size of the room, sound your going for, damage risk, what the look should be (live or studio), what you have available you don't see a lot of LDCs used live but then there is Kenny Rogers and a C12VR on his acoustic so it's not unheard of

Talked them into coming to the studio and we did the old fashioned way
