Default Re: 24p - 23.976 fps video & 24 fps audio

Thanks Frank. So, if I'm understanding you correctly, I bounce my master out as a 48kHz file (they need a LtRt downmix for screening in FCP with Director), and that will sync up with the FCP project, because I have done the work to a 23.976 picture in Pro Tools, which is the only key factor?

I could theoretically even give them a 22.050kHz file, and it would still sync up fine if my work had been done to the correct image frame rate!!

Thanks again

To repeat what Frank said, frames govern picture speed, sample rate governs audio speed. If the audio was recorded at 48k, then it was recorded at that SR to the speed of whatever the picture was running at. If they shot and edited 23.976 then you are in sync if you run at PT 48k. Changing the frame rate of the PT session does not change the speed of the audio.

FCP has an LtRt decoder??

Hunh?? First off, that is half of 44.1 and if you give them this, FCP will pull the audio against a 48k base rate because their project was setup as a 48k project. Re-read what Frank posted.

It does not matter what SR was used to record the audio. To stay in sync, you need to run at the same SR. You could "work" at 24 fps, but if you do not change the SR, the audio will still run to speed.

Thanks Tom, I think I'm finally getting it. When I said LtRt, I meant to say LoRo or just straight stereo.

And thanks to eveyone else too.

You're finally getting it? getting what? there is nothing to get! I'm afraid to say that this is a problem in your mind, in the real world, there is no problem at all.

Well, Frank did most of the explaining. It can seem confusing. And I can kinda see where you would think that 24 related to 48K b/c 24 is half of 48. But, re-read what Frank wrote and a little of what I wrote, and I think it will become clear.
