Default Having MAJOR problems with Digi\'s Midi I/O. Alternatives?

I've had almost nothing but problems with my Digi Midi I/O. I've even tried buying a second one to see if the first were defective, but the results are the same...Midi I/O often, on a very regular basis, showing up as "grayed out" in the Midi Setup window and getting it back online is always a 20 minute ride of trashing prefs, rebooting, launching PT, quitting PT, trashing prefs, rebooting, etc etc. WAY to frustrating when you have a creative artist trying to get an idea down QUICKLY.

Are there alternatives to using Digi's Midi I/O? I mean, the MIDI setup seems now more like a generic Apple thing, being perhaps part of Apple's Audio Setup, rather than a Digi thing. Does this mean we can use any midi interface made by anyone? And if so, what is everyone using out there?

Thanks in advance, guys. I've already posted a thread on the Midi forum, hoping that Digi responds. But I have to move on. I need to get Midi reliably working.

Default Re: Having MAJOR problems with Digi\'s Midi I/O. Alternative

This happens to me all the time. Try launching the MIDI set-up in OSX and hit "rescan". This almost always fixes it for me. I have also found that if I have any devices plugged into the MIDI I/O that are powered on before it, the problem is worse and I have to power the device off and reboot.

Good luck,
-Lee

Same here... "rescan" is ok, but it doesn't help when it happens in the middle of a take.

Regards, Nils.

That's unbelievable!

Using an old Steinberg Midex 8 here with no issues (except I don't benefit from Digi's 'midi time stamping')

My other rig has an M-Audio midiport x4 which is also fine.

To think I almost swapped them both out for Digi Midi I/Os last year....

Default Re: Having MAJOR problems with Digi\'s Midi I/O. Alternative

For the record I have one that's working.

Digi MIDI I/O (Powered)> d8b, M-audio 49 keyboard>Kawi acoustic MIDI Grand.
Mac G5 dual 2.7 PPC, 10.4.10, PT's 7.3.1cs4. HD3-2/192’s (24 analog x 24 analog)

I use the rear USB port No Hub.
My 2nd rear port has a Hub for ILok and qwerty-Keyboard.
BTW- My midi keyboard is going in via midi and not USB.

I have notices that the G5 USB ports are some what finicky regarding type of hub USB2 USB1 mixtures and so forth.
I've also note that PT's MIDI-Prefs (For me) should be set to none for default thru instrument*
*This feature and the midi click in new session does not seem to stick with PT’s Preference files and needs to be checked.

The global offset is set to –60 and I do use delay compensation for tracking midi to audio.
Under Pt’s setup I filter out POLY and MONO aftertouch unless I need it.
Under setup MIDI input I choose only ports I need as well.
Playback engine set to 256

More and more I use VI’s and since 7.3.1 all but NI FM8 have been solid.
(Kore patches that rely on FM8 also present issues)
K2 (Komplete3)(All samples on separate SATA drive), melodyne3-MIDI, Reason3 All stable (2 CPU processors enabled @ 85%).
Note: I rarely stay virtual very long. 2-6 instances before I print to audio and make inactive my virtual midi.
Typically I’m in the 60-80 tracks or 15-30 tracks for Jazz.

I had issues in the past with midi and pro tools but the port isolation and hub management did help.
Keeping USB 2 separate from USB 1 ect....

Also you can save alternate Audio-Midi sets then switch if you have issues.

I have on another system 2 MTP-AV's and the network one sometime gets lost after a full system shutdown. Recalling the presets and rescan from AM gets it back.

I’m not sure if any of this helps (I hope so) but it may help to know that some do work and see if Digi will replace your unit.
My was purchased in 2005.

PS. Regular cron scripts, Font catch cleaning,
Regular Pro Tool Database Helper (Volumes & Databases).
Occasional prebinding rebuilds and directory rebuilds
Via Cocktail 3.5.4 and Diskwarrior 3.0.3

Logic 7.2 and DP 4.6.1 run via core audio MOTU 896.
I never added or use any Digi core audio.
