It's not like double tracking, it is so you can blend the tone of two or more amps together to get a more unique tone. Its also just as natural, because it's you playing, just through a different amp.

You could also record the direct out of the amp into PT. Then send that out to an amp into a Guitar cab. Mic the cab and record that. Then you can infinately change up the mics/positions and rerecord all you want. I do this to make space with single guitar lines or just because I can.

It's not only to blend..

If you just recorded Jimmy Page doing a solo on a song and it was the most amazing thing you ever heard... Except the amp wasn't quite right for the song... Do you call him back in to play it again?

I'm just saying... The most inspiring playing can't always be repeated.

(yeah I know, JP probably wouldn't have some schmuck recording eng mucking with his tone.... But you know what I mean)

I remember reading an article with Eddie Kramer about recording back in the day with Hendrix and Zepplin, etc... And that is EXACTLY what they did!!! If the tone wasn't working during the mix... they setup the amps again and re-recorded.

Amazingly enough, the big name guys back then were actually good enough where they could copy their own stuff pretty much verbatim...or at least close enough to where the intensity was matched.

Back then you were famous BECAUSE you were a great musician. Nowadays you are famous REGARDLESS of how crappy a musician you are. LOL The crappy musician is lucky to get one good take in 13 hours. the great musician is hard pressed to find one bad take in 13 hours.

Wow, you are so right O.G. Killa. When I do guitar takes, I record the whole take. Yes, I play my guitar the whole song through. It works for me. I learn the song for one and I also keep up the chops. I can't retain the feel if I keep stopping and starting. I can usually get what I want in about three takes. Sometimes a little more if .....well...oh....ok..I like to invite Sam Adams in too listen once in awhile.
Back to your point Killa. What ever happened to those days where Musicians actually could play their instruments?
