This 11R update offers some nice amps and a significant improvement in the effects department. Until I hear the "Custom" amps, its hard to say what void they may fill. I would have preferred a few more classic clean amp models (Fender Princeton especially), but the Matchless and Fender Super Reverb will fill my needs nicely.

All the new effects are a major improvement, but I am a bit surprised these weren't part of a free update, or made available sooner. Although most of these effects are included with PTLE for recording, the 11R was somewhat lacking in effects for live use. However, I'm pleased with the new effects provided in the update.

More speaker sims are nice, and the bass amps sims obviously require appropriate speaker sims.

One disappointment is that this upgrade eliminates the use of PowerPCs. If the DSP in the 11R is doing the heavy lifting, and Power PC users were able to limp along with PTLE8, why would the update cause the 11R to no longer work with a Power PC? Yeah, I know PowerPCs are old computers, but Digidesign/Avid upgrades have imposed more computer replacements than any software product I have used.

Its hard to please everyone, but it appears that Avid took notice of user feedback. Price is subjective, but this upgrade offers something for everyone (except PowerPC users) and seems to be a pretty good value.

Chris, a few questions:

The new Custom Modern 800 description sounds very similar to the already existing DC Modern, which is also based on the JCM 800. How is this one different from that one?

Also, it's been asked here a few times, but can we get an official word on whether these new amps and fx will be available to the Eleven Plugin version? It would be really nice to know.

One more thing: How hard would it be for a firmware update that would allow the digital i/o to be used as the effects loop?

There is no update for the Eleven Plug-in at this time and I have no estimate on when or if that will happen.

Hi Chris,

about presets, it could be interesting you use some presets made by users and posted at Elevenrackpresets.com. For instance. In my case, I did a Petrucci preset which is very IMHO convincing (with the M-2 lead), and guys like Vaisatchatrucci may bring a lot (his "Edgetrucci clean" preset is awesome). It is not the stock presets are bad, but some of them may be highly optimized...

My 2 cents.

Chimp,

Thanks for your answer on that. Can you answer the other 2 questions I had in that same post? If not, maybe Chris will chime in. Thank you!

The DC Modern is like a JCM800 on steroids, with heavy modifications. The Modern 800 is like a slightly modified JCM800. I find it amazing how many amps are based on JCM800 circuit, yet from that one basic circuit you can get a huge range of sounds by making various mods. Another example is a Plexi, which is based on Tweed Bassman, but they sure sound different.

That should be doable. You should vote for it at IdealScale, if you haven't already. The more votes it gets the more likely we'll do it.

Excited for the Matchless and new cabs. I'm also looking forward to seeing and feeling how the speaker breakup option will enhance each amp.
The only thing i was really hoping for was the ability to run double mics stereo. My favorite mic combo is a 121 and a 57 together. Maybe in the next update!
