mix recall within same session?
yo! anyone know of a good way to set a mix recall within a session to quickly go back to a previous mix without reloading a saved session? it seems there should be a fast way to show clients differences in mix versions (you know how it can be when they are sitting behind you asking to hear the last version...) without having to reload a previously saved session from back up. d |

Re: mix recall within same session?
If you always mix to tracks within your session it's pretty easy to have multiple mixes available.
You could use additional tracks or playlists - whichever suites you better. |

Not quite-playlists only allow multiple edits-there is only one automation playlist per track. Just do save as's. It's still pretty quick to switch.

Re: mix recall within same session?
I was referring to playlists of the mix master tracks, not the element tracks within the session.
You have a FULLMIX track, you could use playlists to store MIX1, MIX2, etc., If you want to have every version of the automation for these mixes, then yes you would need to do Save As, but the OP was asking about quickly hearing all the different mixes - i assume he doesn't want to open and close sessions constantly to do that. |

Re: mix recall within same session?
Assuming you're not locked to picture, once you have your first mix version just copy the whole thing and paste it downstream as many times as you need. You'll have to take care of a couple items of housekeeping: assuming you have markers on the original (top, verses, choruses, bridges, etc) you'll have to remake those in your copy(ies), and you'll need to automate all your plug parameters in the original so changes in subsequent versions won't screw up the original.
Once you've done all this, you can use your markers to show your client alt. mixes -- or the same section mixed several different ways -- simply by punching in the marker numbers. Once you get this method down, you'll find it's so fast that you'll have to slow down so the clients can keep up with you. |

Re: mix recall within same session?
Yes, I have already mentioned the need/want for mixer recall.
First point would be in a session with no automation, simply to have a mixer A/B snapshot (including all plugin settings, EVERYTHING). The need for this came about when I was doing something complex (like parallel compression) and couldn't punch the effect in/out with one button. The best I could come up with was a two-mute-button switch affair. But this seems too slow for a real A/B. Then people mentioned it would be good to have snapshots that held all the automation data, this would allow you to do versions of your mix as you would like. In the grand scheme of things, would this be a massive headache to add to the software? Are there any DAWs that currently do this? On a real mixer you have nice big buttons to instantly switch between snapshots. Is the PT mixer not meant to be in direct competition with hardware mixers?
