fixing overmodulation in PT?
I have some location sound on DAT in which there is overmodulation. The problem is not on the levels on the DAT (levels peak at -12) but rather the distortion came from the lav mics' gain being too high. Any suggestions as to how I might approach this problem? It's interviews for a doc so ADR is not an option.
Thanks, Andrew |

Re: fixing overmodulation in PT?
I think you are stuck with distortion. Once it's there it's there for good. Sorry for the bad news.

Re: fixing overmodulation in PT?
I've run into this before when handed location interviews with overdriven pre's.Since lavs are pretty bright, sometimes you can soften the distortion a bit by taking out some highs without cutting into the voice too much. You can also mask the offending vo a bit by adding a soft bed of music underneath or adding some room ambience.

Re: fixing overmodulation in PT?
FYI When I do live sound, recording dialogue on location, interviews, that kind-o-thing... I carry a couple of
RNC ( really nice compressors) in my gig bag. Each unit is 1/2 rack sapce, very small...easily tossed in a breifcase or bag, and extremely useful.... cuts down on a *LOT of digital overs and meter pegs... cheers georgia
