Default fixing overmodulation in PT?

I have some location sound on DAT in which there is overmodulation. The problem is not on the levels on the DAT (levels peak at -12) but rather the distortion came from the lav mics' gain being too high. Any suggestions as to how I might approach this problem? It's interviews for a doc so ADR is not an option.
Thanks,
Andrew

I think you are stuck with distortion. Once it's there it's there for good. Sorry for the bad news.

I've run into this before when handed location interviews with overdriven pre's.Since lavs are pretty bright, sometimes you can soften the distortion a bit by taking out some highs without cutting into the voice too much. You can also mask the offending vo a bit by adding a soft bed of music underneath or adding some room ambience.

Cheers
Craig

FYI When I do live sound, recording dialogue on location, interviews, that kind-o-thing... I carry a couple of
RNC ( really nice compressors) in my gig bag.

Each unit is 1/2 rack sapce, very small...easily tossed in a breifcase or bag, and extremely useful.... cuts down on a *LOT
of digital overs and meter pegs...

cheers
