Default Brainworx bx_limiter any good?

Easter egg special on the Brainworx xl_limiter for $19 US; combine that with the $10 US coupon they sent out to loyal customers and it seems like a great deal not to pass up. My question is: is it any good? I already have a few limiters that are fairly clean and this one seems more like a 'character' limiter in the vein of the Stillwell Rocket is an 1176-type character limiter. Is it a Jekyll & Hyde that can do both or does it live more in one world and not the other?

The sale goes until 11:59PM PST on the 16th.

Bx plugins are usually very good, if nobody else chime in I'd say don't waste that coupon and get it Jack!

It is good and eats very little cpu. IF you want something better, their XL limiter has got too little attention. It is great, though that one is a resource hog...

Thanks for the replies - just grabbed it. Good to hear it's not a cpu muncher. And having both the sale and coupon is much needed here right now - have some financial setbacks that were unforseen so it's pinch-a-penny for a while.

I wish I had back all the money I've spent on things because they were inexpensive.

I currently have a dozen of pieces of analog gear that I need to sell and countless plugins that I forgot I even own.

I have a much stricter policy now on need and usability. For example, UA's new SSL Channelstrip is so good that it's replaced many plugins I had been using trying to "get there". Takes me back to these days.

I don't buy just because something is inexpensive; it also has to fulfill a need I have AND can be made to work for other uses. I have an aversion to paying full price for anything if I can help it and that has helped me to expand my pallette at less cash outlay. I think the only things in my setup that I ever paid full price for was HOFA IQ-EQ, a UA solo610, two TLM103's and an AKG C414.

What does it do that your current ones didn't? You like it so far?

Personally, I'm not a fan of peak limiters on individual tracks or subgroups as they hide bad gain staging. Peak indicators exist for a reason.

I would pass.

I have maybe a dozen plugs from PA but I never use this one because I didn't really like the sound.

I just downloaded the plugin this morning and haven't had a chance to try it yet. Got the usual Saturday chores to keep the wife happy.

I don't tend to get aggressive with peak limiters but use them to catch the odd peak that gets past any compression I'm using. A safety net if you will. The only time I get aggressive is with bass tracks when I need a strong bassline. For the type of stuff that I do if I were to keep my gain staging such that a peak indicator never lights then things get too wimpy sounding. That's why the safety net.
