Sensible post. Thank you. It's also true, though, that even companies with good products that people enjoy will sometimes fail for other reasons. For example, not cutting costs in a downturn, or making highly leveraged investments in new projects just before a deep recession.

Suppose Avid laid no one off in 2008-2009. Suppose they went for broke in 2007-2008 to produce the new HD alternative we've all been pining for since 2006. Suppose they were actually able to borrow the cash that this would have required (unlikely).

Does anyone really think their sales in the last year and a half would have supported this? There's not a whole lot of investment in new equipment going on in many studios these days, brothers. And a lot of people are selling what they've got. Used HD rigs aren't going cheap just because the technology is older. And that doesn't even take into account Avid's large market in home studio equipment.

There's simply not enough buying going on out there right now. The pro's are watching their pennies if they're still in business. The hobbyists are struggling to pay their mortgages and keep the refrigerator full. Why do you think the plug-in developers have had so many deeply discounted sales this past year or so? I've never seen anything quite like it. If you have the money, this is a great time to be stocking up.

If Avid did what we wanted them to do, they would most likely end up tanking just when people are ready to start buying again. No Avid, no Avid jobs and a next generation rig that never makes it to market. As much as I hate to admit it, Avid has probably been doing more things right than wrong lately.
