Default Question about 'Punching-In'

For some reason i am unable to punch-in while playing. For those who don't know what punching in is, and most may, but some do not. It is when you are playing the project and you have an audio track armed to record and while its playing you press record to replace or retake over another track to fix a problem. So when i am playing the project and press the record button to record over a part of an already done track nothing happens. i have been just recording a seperate track under it but that gets time consuming. When i use it on a mac at work the punching-in works fine. ive heard that there are problems with windows 7 and Pro Tools 9, so my question is, is it a settings problem or a software problem?

FYI
It can be turned off because it uses an extra voice for each channel that is record enabled.
