Dell XPS 9000 i7 920 with Win 7 64bit
Hi...
New to this forum, was wondering is there a thread that contains computer make, model, processor, operating system and whether PT works with it... Looking at buying a Dell XPS 9000, has a i7 920 processor, looking at 12GB, with 3TB raid drive. It comes with Windows 7 64 bit (is this going to be a problem)... running PT LE 7... Has anyone tested with this or vey similar system? Don't want to spend the money until I know it will work... Thanks... |

Re: Dell XPS 9000 i7 920 with Win 7 64bit
1. Don't get a Dell.
2. PT does not support RAID 2a. You'll still need a separate dedicated audio drive and a qualified firewire controller. 3. PTLE 7 will not run on windows 7. You'll need 8.0.3 with the 8.0.4 drivers. And then it will probably still give you fits 'cause it's still a BETA release. |

Re: Dell XPS 9000 i7 920 with Win 7 64bit
Get a Dell precision workstation from their small business division. You can order it with XP installed and a free upgrade to W7 which you can install on another drive if you can't wait.. It includes US-based tech support, next day on-site repairs and no OS bloat.
PT uses its own disk routines which are not compatible with RAID.

sw rec,
What is it that you have against Dell? I'm not defending them, just curious on what your experience has been with them. I've had my eye on this machine for a while, and at least on paper, it seems to match well with the i7 builds everyone else is running. X58 chipset, i7 920, tri-channel memory.

Re: Dell XPS 9000 i7 920 with Win 7 64bit
Thanks for the information, I was looking at the Raid as we have had a lot of problems with our hard rives lately. Running an old music XPC...
I thought the processor, chipset and such would be more than efficient to run PT LE... I will look at the precision workstation with XP... Any recommendations besides Dell... |

You could always build your own i7 rig

Re: Dell XPS 9000 i7 920 with Win 7 64bit
I seem to remember a video from DigiTv where they were using a Dell XPS to demo Pro Tools 7.3 or 7.4, but that was years ago and there seems to be lots of people having problems with Dell and Pro Tools.
Your best bet is to build the rig yourself. It would be cheaper, and you could get higher quality parts that are 100% compatible.

Re: Dell XPS 9000 i7 920 with Win 7 64bit
I am running a Dell inspiron i5 with no problems (other than the fact that Pro Tools for Win 7 is not very stable) and it runs fine. I take sessions home from the studio computer which is an i7 and mix at home on the laptop.
The main problems I have are to do with FPS and creating fades. If I create fades, I get an error message right away. If I open up a session with fades already created, it runs no problem. The FPS won't always match even though it says it does and PT won't lock. This is with HD vid only. If I run at 29.97 DF no probs. Same with 29.97 NDF I don't think these are problems with Dell, I think they are problems with PT.
