Back tracking would only slow them down more, and would not promote the sales of HDX cards. If they kept TDM in the code for PT11, what would encourage anyone to buy HDX? They can't survive on software upgrades alone. Avid is a hardware company.
Actually I think they are shooting themselves in the foot by not allocating the resources. I've transitioned from my HD3 rig to running a new Mac with 3rd party hardware, and other than lost plugins I hardly noticed a difference.

What Avid has lost is thousands of dollars I would have spent on new system whose awesome new "killer app" would have sucked me in. Without a "killer app" or fantastic capability (i.e 32 i/o in a single rackspace for < $4k) I'll just find a cheaper way to stay in the game.

At AES Antelope announced a 32 i/o + MADI interface, in a single rackspace for $3k. Once again AVID lost a chance to catch some $ from an HD user upgrading. I'm all over this one.

Let's just hope that Avid will release 64 bit drivers for the nex Mac os ans the new windows 8 os (or 9 if it comes out after pt 11), if they don't then it's very likely that the 192 will not work with PT 11 at all, even if Avid did nothing physically in the code of the daw to make them stop working. Just not released any new drivers for them.

I could be mistaken... But I don't see why the 192 itself needs any drivers at all, 64 bit or otherwise. It is not directly interfacing with the OS, only the card it is connected to. There's no reason a 192 should stop working with an OS change, or even a DAW switch for that matter.

I'm not sure either, but I wouldn't be surprise it's for inter-communication between the interface and the card itself. I don't remember having seen drivers for the interface on it's own, but there might be installed by the software itself.
