Re: State of the Industry
I was thinking of starting a topic about this, but this one is along those lines,
so here goes. Every decade of the late 20th century had its own distinctive musical sound, and if one hears a song of a certain style, he or she can probably identify very closely the time period from which the song came. Examples of styles associated with certain decades are: 1950's-Rockabilly 1960's-British invasion, phsychedelia 1970's-Glam rock, disco 1980's-New Wave, "Hair Band" metal 1990's-Grunge, alternative, "Seattle" sound It seems like there is NO signature sound emerging for the decade we are in. Unless that signature sound is J-Lo or Britney Spears-artists which rely solely on sexuality and shock value with no musical originality at all-something that obvoiusly is required to create a "signature sound". It's not likely to be them! I really am amazed that the time we are in is so devoid of a sound which will, years from now, identify the time we are in. It's a very ominous portent, IMHO! Re: State of the Industry
Maybe the sound of the 00's will be surround if they start installing it in cars. Couldn't that be a driving hazard?
The X-Mass issue of Billboard had no Hip-Hop or R&B acts in the top ten albums. Also in Billboard they were talking about alot of big studios closing because project studios have gotten so good. It seems we're ripe for change. |

Re: State of the Industry
I like to watch Britney with the sound off...and play a favorite CD from the past decades. Easy on the ears, and easy on the eyes too.

Re: State of the Industry
In addition to what JohnGalt wrote:
pre british invasion- pretty boy manufactured crooners pre punk/new wave- jam bands and watered down bubble gum pop. industry created disco (which sounds suprisingly inspired nowdays) Pre grunge/rap - more 4 on the floor dance music for idiots pre whatevers next- cloned pop rock bands that use the same guitar/drum sound plug in and manufactured pretty boy bands who know how to dance |

The predominent musical style of any decade only becomes obvious once we've left it behind and entered the next. The time in which one currently exists always seems to have no predominant style, until one is able to look back on it with hindsight, and in light of the next stylistic shift that ossifies and illuminates the past. After all, isn't the moment when something sounds old the same moment when its characteristics become obvious. Or, to put it simply, Cher. (A similar phenomenon is the "things aren't as good as they used to be" gripe which older people have been expressing as far back as their thoughts have been recorded. I believe there may be text from Ancient Greece in which the elders bemoan the decline of theater, along the lines that it just isn't what it used to be.) Dems de way it is, dems de way it always wuz, dems de way it always will be. Arrrrr. -MattiMattMatt |
