When going to a Premium Immersive Theater such as those playing
Dolby Atmos, DTS X you get a playback very close to the way it was mixed and intended to be played back ( and they charge you for it )
IMAX calibrates every day in the morning. Their IMAX Theaters play back at 85 reference.

The Imax theatres in my area suck; they upsample movies all the time, play them at the wrong aspect and the sound is regularly sub-par. Very disappointing. Most people don't care/complain cuz they're on their cell phones half the time anyways.

Martin (Cheesehead)

Olympic in Barnes plays back at calibrated levels
Great theatre
I saw one of the Bourne films there and it was VERY loud. I remember asking Chris Burdon how he coped during the mix run!

Thanks Mike,

Barnes is a bit far from me, but I'll put it on the list.
Really they play back at 7? I thought only Atmos theatres wwere doing that?

I often wonder how mixers are coping with the levels of some films, some are crazy loud, painful!

Interestingly, Curzon Victoria has all the sound controls in glass fronted server racks in the downstairs bar, so you can see what level each screen is playing at!

Unfortunately, that means you can see that the cinema you're about to go into is set to 4.5

Out of interest, what cinemas are on your list?

In my neck of the woods (which I think is similar to you) I've found Clapham Picturehouse Screen 1 is good, although the rest of the screens there are pretty bad.

And then Picturehouse Central Screen 1 is very good, although that's their Atmos one so you'd expect that!

Yes, not encouraging when you've just forked over £15 for a ticket!

To be fair, I think they have some kind of automated system between ads and the film (not sure, as I forgot to ask the staff) as the level setting was changing whilst I watched it and some of the screens even got all the way up to the dizzy heights of 5.5.

I may even have seen a 6 but that may have been a fever dream...

How does Dolby police theaters? Who would pay for that? Dolby has let go of personnel lately and obviously there will be no money policing Theaters SPL playback levels.
