Like many here, I'd be a lot happier with performance issue solutions than big new features, most of which won't benefit me much (other than being able to make edit changes without interrupting playback). The most elaborate session I've ever composed was for a documentary video and even then I had at most 70 MIDI tracks during composing stage. I can't imagine EVER needing 1024 MIDI tracks unless I want 1 MIDI track per note!

But things that make PT stable and less prone to random crashes...that would be great!

Thanks, John. This is interesting and helpful. I had not seen this before, but will definitely try it.

(Excuse my delay answering - had to feed the possums!)

This calms things down, too:

Windows - System Configuration – Services Tab:
Tick the ‘Hide all Microsoft services’
Click on ‘Manufacturer’
I only check 4 boxes: Bonjour Service/Mbox Pro Audio Device Monitor/Conexant Audio Message Service (onboard Audio)/Pace License Services
Restart computer

Worth it!

There are certainly different schools of though. And while I agree no one will ever really need to record more than a couple of midi tracks, I certainly like to work where I don’t have to be constantly trying to remember the routing in VEPro and ProTools I’d i want to setup a new midi track. I also like having all of my sounds ready to go so there is no delay if I want to try something different real quick. So I am defiantly looking forward to having twice as many midi tracks. Rec arm and play! I’ll finally have enough room to have all of my sounds up at once.

Amen!

Imagine sitting in the newly Oak lined Avid staff room (paid for by generous donations (aka subscriptions) during a new feature brainstorming session. One of the interns sitting in a corner raises his hand and says "what if we could double the midi track count so folks can get 1024 tracks of midi in a session." You can hear muffled laughter at the table of experienced software engineers. One of the Experienced engineers, who is also a musician and Pro Tools user that is sitting at the table scoffs saying "we can't even get a session to play a few VIs with our inefficient CPU usage. Our customers have to freeze all their VIs just to get anywhere. How about we focus on getting the software to work first then we can fool around with things that are much lower on the priority list." The guy sitting at the head of the table tilts his head and puts his hands on his chin thinking intently, pausing at both suggestions. After a long uncomfortable silence, it was so silent you could hear the heavy breathing of the older engineers that have been with Avid since the beginning. The man at the head of the table finally starts to talk, everyone in the room perks their ears to hear the wise sage advice forthcoming: "1024 Midi tracks, man that sounds sexy, let's do it. I'm so glad we had this brainstorming session. Ok guys get back to work we're done here, what a productive meeting!"

If you install it when it comes out, you'll be sorry. They are obviously having major problems with this release. I doubt they'll get it right on the first go round. I know that's a sucky thing to say, but I fear that it is true. Watch and see.
