Default Using Pro Tools with your own equipment?

Hey guys,

I recently bought an MBox, but seeing as how it's USB powered.. I ran into a bunch of latency problems. Before I had the MBox, I used Cool Edit and my own hardware that I became accustomed to (pre-amp, and sound card). I had originally thought the MBox could be used like a dongle, as long as it was in, then I could use my old equipment. Instead, I was forced to use the MBox inputs and outputs.

I was wondering if there were other Digidesign investments that would let me use my original pre-amp and sound card to record my music, while still using Pro Tools. I really enjoy using that program for audio recording, rather than Cool Edit, but would prefer to use my old hardware.

Will the Digi 001, 002, or 002r allow me to do this?

Thanks.

Only the obsolete PTFree will allow you to use a different sound card.

If you're serious, just ditch the Mbox and get 002R. It's superior to the Mbox in every respect (except small size), and better than ay sound card you're probably using.

Definitely, I think that's what I got to save up for... I was reading up here and there, and ran across this page on Ebay with the Digi001. This guy says that the 001 would be the preferential choice over the 002r if you don't have the money. What do you think? The 002R is nice, but is out of my price range.

How are the pre-amps on the Digi001? Clean sound? Do you get as much buffer issues with it as the MBox?

I'm going to check up on reviews for the 001 right now.

The pre's and the converters on the 001 suck, plain and simple. We have one(purchased way before the 002 was a reality) but have appogee converters for i/o via spdif. We use it for mixdown only.

Hmm... so in plain terms, don't get the 001? Which would you recommend instead?

The 001 is a good unit provided you understand its limitations.

Do not use te digi001 premaps, and preferable get a better ad/da converter. In a way...get a 002R. Really.

I'll 2nd, 3rd and 4th the statements about the 001s preamps - the difference is night and day.
Though, if you have a preamp already that you like then you can use it with the 001 by lightpipe or the line-ins. I use my 001 with an octopre and it sounds pretty darn good for the money.

Honestly if I had it to do over, I would go ahead and dive right to the 002r (which I intend on doing in the next 12 months anyway). Its worth the extra money.

Lightpipe yes, the analog ins no IMHO. The 001 pres are very neutral, neither flattering nor too degrading, the big weak link is the converters, which you go through on all the analog inputs, mic or line.

If you want a decnt soudn from an 001 get an outboard converter. FWIW I think the Octapre is the best choice for lightpie.
