Re: Who\'s your Favorite Recording Engineer/ Produc
Even though he's now widely regarded as a wanker, let's not dismiss the contributions of Phil Spector. Boom-boom-boom-CRACK! Need I say more?
Also, has Daniel Lanois been mentioned? He should be mentioned. I guess helping make U2 become a houshold word, and in turn aiding Bono to become the Irish Shirly Temple would be enough to earn him a nod, but how about the production on his solo records? Great stuff all the way Rick Rubin deserves a big nod as well. From Johnny Cash to AC/DC, to Weezer's only Platinum record. And that's just in the last couple years. Herb Alpert. Scoff if you will, but those Tijuana Brass records STILL sound great today. Let's not even talk about all his other achievements, not least of which was co-writing "Wonderful World," which landed in the top 20 3 times by 3 different artists. Brian Wilson. Good God. Brian Wilson. I'm still amazed everytime I listen to Pet Sounds, not to mention many other Beach Boys recordings. Those are just the guys that immediately spring to mind.

Daniel Lanois - the mood man.
Eddie Kramer - that Hendrix stuff is so far ahead of it's time. T-Bone Burnett - turned the awful 'Leslie Philips' into the amazing 'Sam Philips'. Scott

Sonny, it's 'John' McEntire from Soma Recording and AMEN for mentioning him. He's fantastic. His work with Rebecca Gates is breath taking. Not to mention he's just about the most kick ass drummer around.

Re: Who\'s your Favorite Recording Engineer/ Produc
Oops. Thanks.
And yeah, he's one incredible drummer. The albums TNT and Standards by Tortoise totally elevated my understanding and appreciation of production and mixing as well as arrangment and composition. I forgot to add my favourite producer right now; DJ Danger Mouse. He's the one who did The Grey Album (made a backing track to Jay-Z's accapella Black album consisting entirely of samples from the Beatles' White Album). He also did the last Gorillaz album which is astonishingly well made, and now the infectious 'Crazy' under the guise of Gnarls Barkley with singer Cee-lo (I think that's how you spell it). I think that tune is the best pop song since Hey Ya! and if you Americans haven't heard it yet, it's been at the top of the UK charts for weeks and you should check it out, it's beautiful. Anyhoo, I'm off. Gotta fix up my friend's HD rig. He finally made the leap from LE and got a control 24 and a Liquid Channel too - fun, fun, fun! Sonny |
