You are showing how much you need to learn(no offense is intended) so I suggest you do a lot more reading. Get a book on home recording and maybe a good aftermarket manual on protools. Anything that has a mic input with phantom power classifies as a preamp. You may have a bad/cheap mic, a crappy sounding sources(like a trashy amp or poorly tuned drums with old heads) or incorrect mic techniques, or even a bad sounding room. It will take some homework and knowledge to figure out how to improve your recordings. A million dollar studio can still produce rotten sound(with a bad engineer) and a lowly Mbox with an SM57 can produce surprisingly good recordings in the hands of a skilled engineer. Let the learning begin.
