Default Anyone built a PT computer using Pcie ssd?

Hi everyone,

Just thinking a bit down the road for my next, and hopefully my last, PT build and wondering if anyone has dared build a PT pc using pcie ss drives instead of sata. I use a fair amount of VI's and would love to be able to take advantage of the speed offered by pcie drives, but will wait until prices are more reasonable and until I have some info on others' successes with pcie ssd systems.
So....anyone out there tested the waters yet?

thanks,
Steve

As per my system listed in my sig line ....Not on PC but have upgraded a Mac Pro from HDD to PCIe SSD albeit so far only for my boot drive

And I am not a computer jock by any stretch of imagination so I do not know if it would be the same. But I imagine it is and is a definitely significant difference in reduced boot and launch times over HDD drives I am getting Black Magic speed test read and write numbers in the 1,200 to 1,400 speed range as opposed to 300 to 400 for the HDD speeds

That's great news. My main interest is the ability to run demanding vst's like EW Hollywood orchestra etc with a number of tracks without choking. Sounds like you've noticed a blatant improvement so probably worth the investment. Haven't heard of any PC guys yet doing this, but I'm sure they're out there.

I have an M2 drive for a system drive, a SSD for a recording drive and a SSD for a VI library drive on Windows 10 and it’s super fast with no functional hardware problems. Runs like a scalded banshee.

I use a Samsung 950 Pro NVME for my system, with SATA SSD's for audio and samples. It's a great improvement over spinning HDD's. I only use the spinners for storage.

I realize it is not as like having it as an actual PT selection but are you aware of the workaround where you can set up track presets called '"Track hack" ?
Granted it is a bit time consuming to set up but if you know what presets you likely to use. You can do it once and then the selection is in the "New Track" setup window. I have my usual suspects set up there and it is nice when one of my session templates is too much, or needs a quick addition of my usual tracks.

I put an OWC/MacSales Accelsior PCIE SSD in my 2010 Mac Pro.
It mounts as an external but otherwise no problems at all.

Yes I am familiar with all the work arounds.

What gets me is the inability of Avid to bring these workflows to the paying customers.

I mean this “back door” has been there since PT10.

So ask yourself why hasn’t it been implemented?

That is a very good question, it took them 3 years to get the Avid HD core audio to work like it did three years ago so who knows
