Default Calling bbaus...calling bbaus

Hi bb aus,

My mobo or my processor has just blown up. My PC is down the docs and the doc will tell me which one of these babies has blown. When I know, I will have to replace either one of them.

You are always bangin' on about the 865PERLL Mobo. I have one of these Mobo's and have only achieved average results with it. 26 Audio in the Davec for example. Now I know this could be a combination of a number of things however give or take a couple of tracks I have never been able to get past this 26 track limit no matter what settings I have changed.

My current set up is as follows

Intel 865PERL Mobo (not sure if mine is L or K)
Intel P4 3.0 GHz 800 MHz fsb (not sure if this is Northwood or Springdale or Prescott)
Radeon 7000 AGP 64mb dual head
120 Gb Seagate HD (3 partitions(2 system and 1 audio))
Generic DDR PC3200 512mbx2 RAM.
a few other bits that are not relevant

Now, if you had to replace the processor, what would you buy? Is my processor the same as yours or not?

From one Aussie (admittedly living in England) to another, please help.

Cheers
neeel.

neeel,

First of all with 1 gig of ram i would make sure to turn off the page memory file (virtual memory file). Secondly what is the purpose of having three different partitions on your hard drive. There is a major difference between three phsysical hard drives and a hard drive with 3 partitions. The partitions could definately be slowing down your whole recording process especially trying to jump from system reading and writing to audio reading and writing all on the same disk.

I would highly recommend getting a second drive for audio (as is recommended), move all the stuff you need onto that drive, reformat your system drive and reinstall the stuff you need and copy the needed saved stuff off of the second drive you just bought, then reformat the second drive to start from scratch with an fresh audio drive.

Also you have not told us what errors are preventing you from recording more then 26 tracks.

Christian

Hi Cristian Thanks for your reply.

The error i am referring to is the 9128 error when my cpu max's out while performoing a Dave C test.

I agree with the system drive fix you put forward. I will buy a new drive soon and have been measning to for a while.

The page file is off.

neeel.

sorry i havnt been around much recently

if you have t o replace the cpu get a northwood

get a good audio hard drive. i use WD IDE 80GB for system and seagate SATA 120GB for Audio. you may as well go with SATA for audio since you have the option
also with a gig of ram turn off the paging file

are you using Hyper-Threading? did you have it on when you first installed windows

if you want great performance and have the money build an allenstein

I'll just add that if your CPU is OK and you need to replace the mobo go for a Abit or Asus. If you have to replace the CPU and can't find a Northwood look for a 3.2Ghz Prescott, 3.4Ghz Prescott's simply run too warm unless noise doesn't bother you too much.

As mentioned above I'd definetely get yourself another HDD for audio. Have you optimised Win XP for performance? If you're running soft synths/samplers then I wouldn't disable the page file either.

Cheers Guys,

I have had the report back from the POC doc and it is in fact the processor. I have elected to go for a Northwood 3.0 GHz to replace the Prescott I had in there.

I will get a new audio drive, as soon as I can save the cash.

Huperthreading was enabled when I installed XP.

I have optimized windows in accordance with the Protools specs and musicxp.net.

There you go, I'll keep you posted on the developments a subsequent performance increase or decrease.

Thanks
neeel
