Default Just a quickie.... SPDIF and digital noise

So I set up my laptop with my M-box to get a feed from a DAT recorder via the SPDIF inputs. Getting the audio was fine and I recorded the gig. Unfortunately i wasn't monitoring the audio... this was a back up test.

On playback the audio has come out with digital noise that rises and goes with the audio level. Also, the file is maybe slightly slower than what it actually was.

Possible answers...

1)The DAT was set at 48KHz and the Protools sessions at 44.1Khz...??? PT was select to internal clock source????
2)The cable was not co axial... just a thin RCA.?
3) The M-box SPDIF input is bad/The DAT SPDIF output is bad.

I did convert the audio into a 48Khz session but the noise was still there.

What could it be and can I fix it...

Thanks JJ

#1 sounds like the most likely explanation. though, with an Mbox, the hardware gets the settings from the session.

what can you do?

re-transfer it.

First: you need to tell both systems to sync off the same clock. So... You can put a second SPDIF cable between the Protools rig so that you have a feed FROM protools to clock the DAT to, as you transfer FROM the DAT to Protools on the other cable. OR, you can tell protools to clock off the DAT. Regardless, you will also need to assure the protools session is set to match the dat recording session.
Second: the RCA cable is fine... it's just 1's and 0's.

cheers
