Default Tips for old PT user, new ProControl user please?

Hey everyone. I've been using Protools for about 4 years working totally in the box without a control surface.

I have access to a ProControl at the studio I'm working at and am trying to learn it in my free time.

I'm finding it difficult to learn since I'm so accumstomed to doing everything on the keyboard and mouse. So I figured I would ask some of you Procontrol guru's what areas or features of the PC do you find are critical to you and are worth learning, as well as features that you don't use and aren't worth wasting time with.

fyi - I am primarily doing mixing for music and post.

Thanks for any tips/suggestions!

Try to do every thing on the PC
Fader rides and panning are much smother on a control surface
use Flip to get a fader for doing Aux sends
plug-in parameter changes via the center section is not smooth but doable

If needed hire a Nun or a Dom to correct you for going to the mouse and/or keyboard when not needed

I'm getting a PC here in the next week or two for my humble room.
I've been on PT for over 10 years trackball and kbd. I can't wait.
That is going to be my approach, except on projects that are for bid only and not in front of a client.
Maybe the first time in front of a client I'll put it in vegas mode and work the trackball and kbd.
Where can I find a nun for hire....with a ruler?

Get into using the matrix in the center section. This makes working with selecting tracks, soloing, arming VERY fast.

And, I might add, this is a feature totally missing from the Icon control surfaces.

Also, start programming views in your Memory Locations, such as - Show Drums Only, Guitars Only, Keys Only, Vocals Only etc. This makes it very fast for bringing your tracks into immediate control for mix adjustments. This is one of the first things I do when I inherit someone else's session for mixing.

Hi,

I work with PC since 6 years and i can't think of working PT without one.
I do anything on the controlsurface except building session templates and loading / tweaking plugins...that's still mousework.
And yes... the channelmatrix surely and regretfully is missing on the Icon. It's a shame they didn't implement it and still the only reason not to go to the Icon ( for me ).

Are there any personality updates that will open Workspace browser from the main unit?

I just got my Procontrol today and I've spent about 5 hours with it so far.
I don't know how I got this far without it. I love it!
The more time I spend with it the easier and more sense it makes.

I am curious about a couple of things.
How many of you guys work with scroll options?
Is there a way to enable input mode from PC?

Thanks
Rob

See if you can get a hold of the Tutorial CD. It should have come with the unit.
It dosen't seem that hard to learn...if you are not under pressure.
