Alternate inputs on RCA jacks.
When you want to listen press "Alt to Mon"
When you want to record press "Alt to in 7-8" and select in 7-8 as your source in protools or other software your using.

Note that on a hi-fi preamp phono input, there's an eq (the RIAA phono eq) applied to the signal so that it plays flat so you're gonna have to recreate this curve.

Either approximate the curve on an eq (google and download it), or there's a free plugin (VST and AU, no RTAS I think) especially made for that. Don't know the name sorry. Google and record in another app than ProTools then import...

Cheers!

or you can use a little mixer like a Mackie that has pre amps. a turntable is line level, so you somehow need to boost the signal.

I just converted some "Hummingbird" for a friend. good stuff...

Or keep a good older hi-fi pre/integrated around that can double as phones/[bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep] boxes amp... Which is what I do at home.

You should perhaps record hotter.
Select the region and try 'Normalize' in the Audiosuite menu.
It finds the loudest part and raises the volume of the whloe region to the max. Export again.

I'm shure there are programs made for just this thing, with a much better workflow. Protools is not, anyway.

This is important.
When you say low volume, do you actually have the audio without the RIAA correction? It would sound very thin, have no bass.

For best results, you need an RIAA preamp. Radio Shack has one. You can find them on eBay. You could also rent/beg/borrow a DJ mixer that has turntable inputs

The other important thing a pre does apart from the riaa deemphasis is present a proper load (47k if memory serves me well) to the turntable out.

One can put together an adapter rca to 1/4" + ground lug cable and solder the load resistors at the receiving jacks end. Then use this to plug into any line input.

I think Radial might offer a quality built stereo di-type box with turntable ins?
