Avoiding artefacts during recording
I'd like to know if anybody have a tips to avoid the artefacts during recording. For example clipping sound of the strings on the pickups or pop in the vocals(instead of antipop). Is there any plugin you should use during the recording?Do you think it's ok to use a compressor during the recording?
Thank Greg |

Re: Avoiding artefacts during recording
Some of what you describe are really the fault of the player/singer and ideally, they would hear their mistake and go back and re-record the take without the flubs. As for recording with compression, my best advice is to go easy. You can always add more compression but you can't take it away. Once it is recorded that way, its done. You might also record to 2 trakcs at the same time and leave one track uncompressed. Putting a compressor plugin on an audio track while you record DOES NOT record the compressed signal. You will hear the compressor working but it is working after the recording is done. The way to record with compression(assuming you are using a plugin and not a hardware comp) is bring your vocal in to an aux track, add the plugin and buss that to an audio track for recording. As for fixing vocal pops on a recorded track, try using an audiosuite plugin on the pop only. Try an EQ plug or highpass filter. You could also highlight the pop and use the gain plugin to lower the level for that part of the wave.

Re: Avoiding artefacts during recording
HI,
also take into consideration that you only need a 2/3 input level in 24bit recording. There is NO need to go all HOT in during recording. The ONLY other way to avoid signal clipping is using a hardware compressor/limiter. But it´s easy to screw up with a compressor in the recording chain, if you´re not sure how it will work with the rest of the mix later on. This does NOT work with plug-ins (beause the plug-in works on the digitized signal, not the analog input) BTW: you should also record without any plug-ins in the signal chain. For the singer did you use a plop/wind killer and shock-mount on the mic? so far regs,
