Default Mbox as recording device in Windows possible ?

Hi,
i plugged the Mbox to a windows pc, with an built-in (motherboard) audio-card driver installed. After installation the Mbox is available in Sounds and Multimedia under the Soundplayer tab only. The device is not available under the Soundrecording tab, the built in audio-device is. I have installed Pro Tools 6.4 and the drivers available with this CD. The Mbox has been recognized from windows normally and Pro Tools starts with Mbox plugged in. I did not test ASIO but, i think ASIO is not playing a role in this topic...
I never wanted to record through Mbox directly into Windows Sound Recorder or Netmeeting or Skype or any other "normal" or "no pro" recording software before, so I'm wondering if this is possible ? Or do I need an upgrade to PT 7.3 or a special wave driver to be able to record with windows tools directly ?

[Moved to the WinXP forum]

As for the problem - the Wavedriver is playback only. You would need to use an ASIO application to be able to record through the Mbox.

i didn't recognized posting in the wrong forum, I'm sorry. Thank you for moving it into the right one.

Thanks for your answers.

I just surfed the support area and have seen that version 5.x was playback AND record...why isn't it possible with wavedriver 7 ?

Because back with the 5.x wavedriver, you couldn't have both the wavedriver and the ASIO driver installed at the same time.

Now you can, but the trade-off is you lose the recording abilities of the wavedriver.

well, thanks for your fast response, this is a great community!
Does the WaveDriver 5.3.3 for Win XP interfere with PT LE 7.3 (if the box of WaveDriver 7 in PTLE setup was unticked and WaveDriver 5.3.3 is installed after PTLE ?
I would like to use the Mbox with Skype, Netmeeting and more of such tools using the "normal" audio devices in a windows setup, and I think I could need more advice on this.

Yes. You cannot install different versions of any of the PT softwares on the same machine without major headaches.

You cannot currently do what you are trying to do with the mbox.

do you have any recommendations for an audio-interface capable of doing what I want to ?
Or for what feature do I have to watch out for to find an appropriate interface ?
Or how do I route the audio of the mentioned applications to a pro tools channel ?

Any standard generic soundcard will do what you want to do.

an input and an output are all you are really looking for there.

You can run a cable from the standard soundcard into the inputs of the MBox and have Pro Tools route the audio through an aux track.

I don't really understand why you would want to use the mbox at all for those particular tasks, though. It really wasn't designed for it.

because of the balanced mic inputs and the possibility to use a better mic than those crappy pc mics...
