The AVE is the only part of PT that is not currently compatible. Since they are rewriting parts of the AVE in this update, it’s safe to assume it will be Catalina compatible.

This might go down as the lamest update in the history of Pro tools

There's a lot of competition for that distinction.

My thoughts exactly. This update should be a big milestone towards Catalina support and we'll have to see if it happens this year or not. Wanna bet?

With all due respect, Avid deserves criticism for not having Catalina support from the get-go. Major developers get beta versions of upcoming OS releases months, or even years, in advance, and Avid is a major Mac developer. It's good that it's on the way, but disappointing they are lagging the release.

Yes, but given Avid is a video developer first (Media Composer pays a lot of bills) - ensuring that video is rock solid without QuickTime is something that even with developer builds needs to be tested. Catalina introduces major shifts in how apps can install portions, as well as the 64-bit issue and death of QuickTime. There is also ensuring that Catalina-compatible builds then go out to 3rd party plugin developers to ensure that it's not breaking anything. This takes time.

Is there some burning need to update to Catalina? I don't get it. I'd rather Avid spend the time to get it right and then update. I'm a hobbyist, but I don't want to lose the ability to use Pro Tools. I don't understand the burning desire by some that seem to assume that the newest OS will make their DAW run better.

No "burning desire" unless you happen to need a new computer that will ONLY come with Catalina. Why is that so hard to understand?

Yea it sucks if your computer breaks just when the new OS is released. Your choices being finding an old computer that is supported or buy new one and wait for crucial updates. OTOH, if you already had old computer buying a "new" old computer isn't so much different.

If you are *planning* to change your computer, you should know that there is going to be some months waiting time now. Shouldn't be a problem to plan deploying the new one some time later.
