$396 so far and Pro Tools is still not working
Avid is asking for another $198 for my Pro Tools 12.7.1 license and Pro Tools is still not working anywhere near as well as my Pro Tools 9 worked.
I do production with maybe 6 to 20 tracks and 2 to 4 virtual instruments. All Avid, Air, stuff. Back in the day, with Pro Tools 9, I could run with sometimes 10 virtual instruments and 20 tracks all day long. CPU use at around 20% at the most. But now with Pro Tools 12.7.1 and only 2 virtual instruments and a couple of tracks it is a nightmare. My CPU use is only at 13%, but I get the non-responsive issue often where the computer needs to be rebooted. And then the computer will not even reboot because of AvidAppManHelper hanging it up. Also there is the CPU overload message that pops up now and then. My CPU is at 13% what gives!!! These problems have been present since Pro Tools 11. I have been using Avid Audio Vision and Pro Tools for 23 years. (17 years at Universal Studios Hollywood) and I am feeling betrayed.

Re: $396 so far and Pro Tools is still not working
Lots of us have Nehalems and have found them to be really reliable machines for Pro Tools. First, I'd disable App Manager for now - you can hack the startup daemon to prevent load at startup.
Second - El Cap is notoriously bad for Pro Tools work; I'd seriously consider downgrading to Yosemite or moving up to Sierra. My main machine (a Nehalem, though with a lot more RAM) is on Yosemite and works very well (as are most of the machines I see around here), but many are having good luck with Sierra which seems to have fixed a lot of the GUI issues that El Cap was having. Lastly, I'd be having a look at Activity Monitor and Console while you're running to see what's hanging up the machine - your sessions sound very small and I don't think should be an issue for this computer. You don't say what VIs you're running, but an errant plug in or VI seems very likely in this case. hth, rich

Re: $396 so far and Pro Tools is still not working
This issue has been resolved after a week off and on with Avid support.
The main problem was an Air Hybrid 3 virtual instrument plug-in. Strange because it was the latest version 3.0.7.19000 and it worked fine as a virtual instrument, but it would cause many AAE -6101 errors. I downloaded a new file from the Air website. The shutdown issue was the Avid Core Audio plug-in not working well with El Capitan. I never use core audio so I deleted it.

Re: $396 so far and Pro Tools is still not working
My recommendation nothing to do with your ProTools issues, however I strongly urge you to upgrade the computer to a 6 core.
It's a piece a cake, cheap, and it will basically double the power of your computer. I can help you with that if you like, just PM me.
