Default external analog buss effects buss effects patching

Hi y'all
I'm an LE guy tasting the forbidden fruit of my friends G5 mac running tdm with a control 24 and a 192 interface ( I'm helping him complete his record) . Beside the fact that I'm now spoiled for life,.here's the problem

He has his rig wired all wrong..he is missing the d-sub connecters for hooking the control room outs correctly so he is running from the aux outs
with "aux to monitor" switched on; on the control 24 he is sending this signal to a DBX DDP with the finalizer preset in and then that goes to his amp and spks. So as you can imagine all his mixes are processed through the finalizer for PLAYBACK ONLY and his mixes are not bouncing to disk with the effect in line. I'm very familiar with my LE system but need to know the best way to insert this finalizer across the master buss to print it. Should I do it on the control 24 or through the 192 interface.
I hope I have explained this in enough detail to enlist your expertise.
thanks for any replies
bryan

The C24 is after the mix buss... so it's wrong - you need to use an I/O insert using the 192 I/O.

Go to Guitar Center and buy the cables you need... He bought an HD system and G5 but can't afford the cables

Hi Rail
Nice to hear from you again
My friend is a good songwriter but new to recording. The store that sold him everything did no tech support to help him him get up and running. I am having him get the proper cables . I spotted the problem immediately and am trying to help him salvage the mixes ..they are pretty darn good ..but on play back only. As I don't own any of the gear in question I appreciate the tip that the cntr 24 is after the master buss...I'm almost thinking of having him play his mixes through the finalizer and recording them on a separate machine. I don't want to have to remix this whole album for him from scratch as it was mixed with the processor in line and sounds good as is.
Do I use a couple channels of the 192 to setup an aux buss for the master fader and patch the finalizer in there?

One would normally just create a Master Fader and assign the insert to an I/O pair (say 7&8 and plug your finalizer in and out of 7&8 of your 192). This would place the insert post fader. If you require it pre fader, then you can use an Aux Track as the Master... but do an A-B listening test to see if you prefer the sound of the busses to the 1-2 stereo buss.

Since he's already been mixing with the finalizer post fader I'd just use a regular Master Fader and insert it on that.

BTW this is the same way you'd do it on your 002.

Thanks Rail, thats what I was thinking

I just want to help him get his mixes down and then I'll dive into rewiring his studio...he has me hooked on playing with his rig. Thanks for your help once again. Are you in LA? I play guitar for FOGHAT if your interested in classic rock I'd like to invite you to a show when we get out there.

Rail to follow up..all he has are dsub to dsub snakes connecting the control 24 to the 192.. to patch an external analog trs unit across the master as we talked about it is the dsub to trs digisnake I need is that correct? Do I pull the dsub of the Control 24 and go directly to the 192 or is there a way to use the control 24 to gain access to the 192 for this purpose?

Its easy on my le system as there are both trs and spidif available for patching. I guess here I need the appropriate digisnake
thanks Bryan

or how about this..can I take the output of the finalizer which he now has feeding his monitors and put it into two channels of the control 24 and record it to 2 channels of the session I'm playing back..hopefully without creating an i/o loop maybe mute the channels I'm recording?

Does he have a patch bay?

If not, you probably need the DigiSnakes which are D-Sub to XLR Male & Female.

How many 192's does he have? In one of my configurations with a C24 I use a D-Sub to D-Sub for the first 8 for the C24 monitoring.. and the second 192 I/O (17-24) is used for inserts. If he's only doing stereo mixes.. you may want to get rid of the D-Sub to D-Sub cable from the 192 to the C24 and just use outputs 1&2 via a D-Sub/XLR-MA to a D-Sub/XLR-FE and then use the other 6 outputs of the snake for I/O.

Hey Rail
He has 1 192 with 8 channels of ad/da and a digital card on the other 8 I could pass it through an ADAT or even record to it. But I think I'll just print to my Panasonic 3800 and reimport to the computer. It seems the easiest until I get him the proper cables.
Thanks for the replies.
