Default External hard drive recommendation?

Hi all,

Looking for a backup external HD for the Mac Pro.

Running a system drive, and a 2nd audio file drive... this will only be for storage so noise shouldn't be an issue... Glyph, Lacie ???

Thanks for the help.

Highly recommended:

Elite-al pro would be suitable for your needs, not to mention it is very quiet. Good for audio use. I have also some Lacie quadras, yet I would choose this for any purpose.

Jussi,

Just looking for something small. Do the Lacie's do OK for you, and do they need formatting (i.e. plug in ready)?

I'll only use need a 500GB...if that matters.

thx

I also recommend the OWC drives(Mercury Elite Pro and Pro Classic). I find they are the best balance of quality and price. Glyph are likely the best you can buy. Lacie, IMHO are the McDonald's of firewire drives. Sure they work, but..........

The expensive WD with firewire and eSATA would likely be okay, but I would still go OWC.

+1 for not using Lacies.

Also... I would reformat ANY drive out of the box, regardless of whether or not they "say" they are Mac ready. Usually this means they are formatted FAT32. It's an archaic format, that will technically read and write in both Mac or Windows, but it has a 3GB file size limit, and shouldn't be used with Pro Tools. Aside from that, formatting for OSX takes about 5 seconds.

Have to throw in my two cents here,
I went with the Glyph GT050Q and have not
regretted it at all. Smooth, fast, quiet, a bit on the
pricey side, but for complete digi support and
peace of mind, you cant go wrong.

might as well spend a little more and have a bit
more confidence with your PT system.

I wanted so bad to get a 2TB HD for the same price,
but the ? brand, and some reviews on here suggested
a smaller sized HD would run best, and so far it has.

Yeah I wouldn't even give a Lacie drive to Haiti... but honestly, it being a backup drive only, u can get away with a WD drive...

Another vote for OWC. I have 3 Mercury AL Elites (1tb and 2 750gb). Great drives. Very well made and super quiet. I had a WD from Best Buy go out on me and I lost all the data. The WD was junk compared to the OWC's and even cost more. Order by phone from OWC. Great guys and great support. Very fast delivery too.
