Default New Mini or Used Trash Can for Home

hi all,

I mostly work out of a facility, however sometimes I take work home or have smaller personal projects (short films) -- editorial work on headphones (Mac soundcard); no mixing, no recording, no VI. Very minimal setup. Mostly RX, Soundminer/Radium, EdiCue. Occasionally I attempt fixes from a full blown mix session, but then the laptop screams at me.

My MBP is a 2012, and an upgrade is starting to appear on my radar. And a little more muscle would be nice for some of my sessions. Portability is not too much of a concern for me. Not currently running any ext interface (see below) or PCIe hardware, except for MIDI keys. I'm looking at a higher end Mac Mini or a used Mac Pro 2013 trash can. MacBook Pros seem to start at such a high price point and the portability is not a must.

Secondly, I am also interested if a small, quality Thunderbolt/USB interface for my cans would be overkill? Pro/Cons? Again, this is not for the main $$ maker rig here.

Thanks!

Hi, welcome to the community.

Trashcan still going strong here. Depends on what kind of a deal you can find.

My buddy pushed a last gen Mac mini and a trash can with some serious plugin processing. Mac mini outperformed the Trashcan by quite a margin. I'm sold for a Mac mini myself.

Best,
J.

Aside from eBay, any trusted sites to search for a deal? I'm an American expat in Czech Rep. so eventually it could be possible to buy in the states and fly with the machine because prices here are sort of crazy and used resellers are hard to find.

Do the newer Minis get hot? I have a 2010 Mini I use for Photoshop and it tends to get a bit warm shall we say.

2010 as in pre-thunderbolt had much more inefficient Core2Duo processor which is notoriously hot. But sure, would be nice to know how hot the new mini is after a heavy session running for couple of hours.

My trashcan runs great and is virtually silent. Great machine.

I'd go for a new i7 mini, iiwy. If you check the Apple refurbished store they come in fairly cheap (depending on config) and the thunderbolt is latest gen as well.

For interface, i would recommend either the focusrite clarett or the steinberg ur-c series, both will be a step up for monitoring from the built in headphone amp, and you'll be able to track as well if necessary
