Recurring Problem with Lacie D2 Quadra Firewire. Daisy chaining FW400 and FW800?
Hi there,
First of all here's my setup: IMac G5 (1 FW 400, 1 FW 800), Lacie D2 Quadra (1 FW 400, 2 FW 800), Digi002 (FW 400). At first I had both the Lacie and the Digi002 connected directly to the computer respectively via FW800 and FW400. Unfortunately after just a couple of months the FWPorts on the Lacie died (USB working fine). I sent it for repair and when I got it back I daisy-chained as follow: iMac-->FW400-->Digi002-->FW400-->Lacie But in this configuration the drive lasted even less. After less than a month I got a message saying the drive had been improperly removed and the firewire was gone again. Now I'm waiting for them to fix it yet another time. But I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong... I know Digidesign recommends to place the drive between computer and Digi002 but that was the only way I could daisy chain using FW400. Would it be possible to connect: iMac-->FW800-->Lacie-->FW400-->Digi002 or would it be better iMac-->FW400 adapter to FW800-->Lacie-->FW400-->Digi002 Thanks! |

I would stay away from sidechaining the 002 and a Hard Drive(especially Lacie)
The so called FW Hub of the 002 is not what i would call reliable. Also have in mind that the iMac(2) FW ports are based on a common bus also. Since there is no other workaround connect each device to each FW Port,or use the Int Drive for rec and the Lacie or whatever for Backup. |

The correct chaining for you would be IMAC-002-HARD DRIVE, all using the fw400 connection. i suspect the the fw400 and fw800 are sharing power, so use one or the other.
i use those d2 drives and they have never let me down. when i read about peoples problems with them i wonder if i've been lucky for 5 years and 12 drives.

I also use the Lacie D2 drives for many years without any problem. But the other cheaper LaCie drives (Porche design, etc) I wouldn't trust, they run much too hot and just stop working

the bus-powered drives are an absolute no-no when it comes to intensive drive activity. they will fail if pushed too hard. fine for storage, itunes. etc., but not for any integral work.
