Default I need help with the NY Compression Trick

I need someone to convert these steps into the digital world because i can't figure it out

1. buss the drums to a stereo compressor

2. Return the output of the compressor to a pair of fader inputs on the console

3. bring the fader levels of the compressor up until it is under the rythm secion just where you hear it.

Whats the best way to route this?

Add a stereo Aux track and put your favourite compressor on it, assign the inputs to say Bus 1-2.
Put a bus on your drum tracks set to Bus 1-2. Bring up the fader on the st Aux track. This idea works very well for reverbs because they use so much CPU. Not just for drums either.

Funny that "trick" has been used in LA for years

Is this an "East Coast", "West Coast" thing?

How do you handle DELAY between the audiotracks and the bussed audio???
I believe the NY trick its only possible in the analog world, or am I missing something??

Hey rail, yeah the "new your compression trick" did start out if I remember correctly in NY (obviously). I recall reading "the mixing engineers handbook" about a year ago and them mentioning early on in recording days LA and NY had different styles. And the NY compression was sending your singal out to a compressor and compressing the hell out of it, cranking up your low end +15db (guestimate) after compression, and tuck it under the original sound your actually compressing. So you can have a huge beefy low end, but still have the attack of the original sound. Pretty cool idea in general! I've used it a few times and it's worked well! I bought a dbx 166xl just for this!

thanks for all the help in the past too! appreciated!

On the "Drums Aux", you'll need to have the same plug-ins on bypass that you're using on the "Compression Aux". This way you'll prevent any delay or latency.
