been using DAW for years (Logic, Ableton, garageband,...). Never had problems record a simple audio track with the built-in mic. Until I bought the industry standard recording software

You have to go into the System Preferences and click on the Sound icon. Click on the 'Input' tab, simply choose 'Internal Mic'. Then when you open ProTools, it should be normalled A1.
You can also use the headphone jack as a stereo analog input by switching to Aggregate Device. Then in the drop down menu below named "Use audio port for:" chose Sound Input and it will be normalled to A1-2. Very easy way to track direct scratch guitar tracks, ect...
