Avid could update the demo. I think they may have wanted to get the "real" version out and then get the demo out.
11.0.1 doesn't do a lot for MAc but does have some improvements for PC. Take a look at the Read Me files and you may not be missing much staying at 11.0

The 11.0.1 update is essential for mac users using McDSP plugins. With 11.0.0 it is necessary to reboot the computer in order to quit protools. Not exactly ideal...
