Default Any benefit using 10,000 rpm drive for system or media drive?

Anyone,

Are there any benefits at all using a 10,000 rpm drive for the system or media drive in a PTLE system? I was looking at a WD Velociraptor drive and would be willing spend the coin if the cost/benefit was there.

Thanks

A 10K drive does have lower seek times, but at the expense of more noise heat, and a larger bite out of your wallet. Only you can decide if that's something you're willing to trade off.

That said I use a Raptor for my boot drive, and have no regrets. I notice a significant difference in the overall snappiness of the OS over a 7.2K drive.

For an audio drive unless your current system is holding you back you're not going to see any benefit.

Overall I have to agree with M.Brane. The only difference in opinion I have is that it is indeed true that a 10k drive will give you higher track count when it comes to audio sessions. A typical 7200RPM Glyph, for example, will get you somewhere between 50 - 60 simultaneous tracks at 48k, and should be able to handle up to 50 at 96k. Use a 10k drive and you'll surpass that for sure. It depends on how complex your sessions are, as well as if you plan to use any intense virtual instruments like Ivory or Vienna.

M.Brane and WishingDigiJosh,

I appreciate your input. It's not quite clear where to put the 10K drive; is it better to have it as the system drive so the OS runs faster or as the media drive where the tracks are stored? Thanks again.

Joel

definitely want the faster drive for the audio. a 7200 drive for system/OS/apps is fine.

the extra overhead from the faster drive will be put to good use when your playing back section after section doing edits and what not...
