Default lacie 5400 w/ macbook pro 7400?

Hi all,

I am getting my first pro tools set-up with mbox2 pro and a new macbook pro, 2.53 ghz with 250 gb 7200 rpm hd. Will there be a problem, performance or otherwise if i record to a lacie ext hd of only 5400 rpm...

Would appreciate greatly any advice...
cheers

'Fraid so. Too slow. You're likely to get all kinds of error messages about "can't get audio fast enough." And Lacie doesn't have the best rep on the DUC, on the whole, either. Seagate and WD are the trusted brands. Make sure you get a drive in a case that has the Oxford chipset, and at least 7200 RPM. See this page for full details:

is it quiet enough? does it meet all the requirements for pro-tools?

Yeah, it's supposed to be one of the best. This page gives all the nitty gritty details:
http://www.glyphtech.com/products/gt050q.html
You see where it says Bridging Chip: Oxford 924

quick question, i am getting ready to buy one of these glyph drives. should i go for the bigger the better?

i could go for a 1TB drive but is it as good as a slightly smaller drive? obviously if i get a drive that big i will need to buy a second one that size as a back up whereas if i buy a smaller sized drive for use i could then get a 1TB as a back up...

if i have the money, should i just spring for the largest drive possible?

There seem to be mixed reports about 1TB drives. Good for some, not for others. If you do get one, partition it up into 4 250s, or 8 125s or something. That should help keep data from getting scattered too far apart, I think. As long as the seek time is as short for the 1TB as for the smaller one, it should be OK.

right, well, the drive arrived today and i did a partition into 4.

it placed 4 drives on the desk top! this is rather a messy way. i thought it would look more like when you open the macintosh HD and inside there would be 4 drives. if i had partitioned 16 drives i would have a very full and messy looking desktop.

is there any way of arranging this better? place them in a sort of folder view?

i would like to view them in 'column view' for instance. so when i click on a desired partition the arrow opens out and shows me what is inside the drive etc.

is this possible? i am new to mac so please answer as if i know nothing! thanks!
