A brand new computer is probably running XP with service pack 2. The first version of Pro Tools that was compatible with SP2 is 6.4cs9.

You will also need to update your pace drivers at www.paceap.com

And unless you upgrade to 7x, you will have to turn off one of the cores in your CPU. Only 7x will take advantage of and be able to use both cores. If you have a Digi001, which I'm assuming you do if you're at 5.3.1, update to 6.4cs6+cs9, update your pace drivers and turn off one core. If you have an MBox, update all the way to 7.1cs7 so you can use both cores.

Cheers,
