Default Question about hard drives

Hello! New to the forums! Long time lurker

I have a question about external hard drives. I need to get one for audio/sessions, as well as one for my samples. For travel, if possible, the most ideal situation would be to have two drives in one enclosure. I'm thinking of getting something like this:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MEMD3FH7T2.0/

Will this work for having audio on one drive, and samples/IR's on another?

I'm using Pro Tools 11 HD Native v11.1.3, and have the newest Macbook Pro Retina 15" with 2.8ghz quad core, 16GB ram, running OS X 10.9.5.

If so, would both drives be connected through a single USB 3 port, and if so, would that affect performance?

Thanks in advance guys.

Mike.

Haven't heard of that brand. Western Digital has a good reputation. Check these:

Cool! Thanks for the heads up! I looked into it, but it is a little larger than what I could lug around for travel, as I'm a touring musician, so I need the most compact solution possible.

Getting two small drives is a little bit of a pain, so that's why a small enclosure housing two would be nice, as I know it's not recommended to keep samples/IR's on the system drive either, which would be convenient for all sessions, but not recommended obviously. And I obviously need two so that my sessions would have access to those samples.

Hi and Welcome to the Community

That enclosure looks great for what you need.

2 1TB drives at 7200rpm 64MB cache so I would get one of those.

OWC are a well known make

$299 is a good price aswell so if you are looking for something like that I can't fault it one bit.

The WD link I wouldn't be so sure as it is the WD "My" series which almost always are cheap drives and slow or green or both inside.

USB3 is super fast and connected to the USB3 port of the MBP will be fine with both drives in there, Remember USB3 is super fast and almost 5 times FW800

Best Regards
Christopher

Check with OWC that it can do JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks), you do not want any kind of RAID for your plans

WD MY Book cases have a horrible reputation, they made some good disks

I would consider a SSD for the Samples disk, some would consider it for both and for a portable drive it's not a bad idea (no moving parts)

Here are the RAID options.

And as Craig said, and I said, anything called "My passport" "My" whatever from WD - Stay away!

Their WDC Black disks are superb but not so portable,

I inly agreed due to the cost of this contraption and i think it looks rather good considering price.

If you would get SSD drives at 1 or 2 GB you would pay a whole lot more than this.

Oh, sick!!! Thank you, everyone!

So, I got just a bit confused.. I SHOULD stay away from RAID then, or it will work?
I just got confused about the "do not want any" and the "here are the options" posts

I'll look into it for the JBOD thing for sure. Yeah, the SSD drives are MEGA expensive, and a bunch of plugin companies just got a lot of my money from black friday hahah

If none of this works for the one I posted (which I'm really hoping it does haha), are there any others that you guys may know of that work great, are reliable, and of course portable (smallest possible for touring purposes... remember.. van and trailers, different city every night convenience etc.).

Thanks again, guys! I really appreciate it!

most cases like this do JBOD it may be an over-site in not listing it
RAID links the dives together so you would not have separate drives you want
