layback to digi

just installed Pro Tools HD 7 and getting used to it.

trying to lay back some audio to digibeta( not something i do very often) but can't get sound out of the system when in machine control record mode.

i can control the digi and it will drop into record at the desired point but there is no activity on the PT mixer meters at all in this mode.
can use a signal generator to send tone out to the digi machine but none of the dialog i need.

i'm probably missing something obvious, but this wasn't a problem previously

Make sure you have PT online as well (apple+J). And how are you chasing Timecode? LTC or Serial?

Also make sure Protools is NOT set to generate code. (In the session setup window)
