Tom, do you have any practical advice on how to overcome problem with SEL button being too close to the adjacent faders? Any tips on how users can safely double press Select button without accidental overwriting automation of those faders? I used an S3L and I enjoyed the ability to use channel encoders as a replacement for Select buttons.

  1. Tracks View on PT Control app gives you improved ability to navigate like S6
  2. Recall Layouts from the iOS App by name
  3. VCA Spill now on the surface - Single Spill mode (double press Select) places the VCA Master on channelstrip 16 and then the members can be banked around it. This is the first time we've offered VCA spill on a surface less than $22k!
  4. There is a way to show (MultiMasters mode press Left and Right banking) VCA's with 8 or 4 faders and then the spill zone will be 8 or 12 faders. VCA Masters can stay parked while you bank around the members.
  5. VCA Spill Recall - you can recall your last spilled VCA without having to bank or search. Press both Nudge Left and Nudge Right
Thanks,
Tom
Tom, my fingers are too thick to double press a select button without touching neighbouring faders on S3 surface. Can VCA spill be triggered from the iPad app?

So, the question is: can VCA Spill (on the S3) be initiated from the iPad app?

it`s not your fingers. I`ve got very thin fingers and am still struggling with that after a year. It`s just that those buttons are placed in the worst possible location imaginable.

We can only hope they'll address it in the S3's successor. That's not gonna happen too soon though, if ever.

given the incredible (amount of) design blunders, both physically and functionally, on all Avid's current controllers, from the Fisher Price series all the way up to the S6,we can only hope Avid let's go of its lost generation of hardware.
The truth hurts, but the only hope is that Avid starts hiring people with tons of industry experience and comes up with a new modular line of controllers. Modular in that all units - no matter the price range - are physically compatible (e.g. faders line up when you line up units and colors and materials match) and functionally compatible (e.g. have mute buttons conform PT itself instead of the on/off joke on the Fisher Price series)
Of course in this scenario Avid should replace all currently sold pieces of crap for free for all Alpha-testers who have been debugging those consoles for free for years. One could wonder if it`s even worth trying to fix the functionality issues and bugs on the S3 given it's terrible physical design in the first place.
Same goes for HDX gear.

If this seems too ambitious, Avid probably should let go go its audio department altogether. Maybe we as users should start looking more into alternatives and inquire other DAW developers about the few remaining Protools features that still outclass those other DAW's. They might be more willing to implement those if they can take a good share of the PT market, than Avid is willing to make it's stuff work.
