Default Playback delay when using QT video

At what seemed to be a random point, my PT sessions now take about 4 seconds to begin playing once I hit play. This is only the case when I have a QuickTime movie in the session. The movie is a .dv file, just as I've been using for years. I've tried trashing all the usual preferences, etc., but the 4 second delay remains. Switching video priority between priorities doesn't help. Machine is a 3 GHz 8-core with 8 gig of ram. Latest version of ProTools. OS 10.5.1.

Again, it was smokin' fast with no delay anywhere until a couple weeks ago. I don't remember installing or changing anything at that time.

Please help - it's killing me!

I assume you did check you don't have preroll turned on in the transport section.
Check your protools preferences on quicktime playback: low medium high i think it says.
Try turning it to medium.

I did try that. Thanks. However I think it is either the new Macs or PT or the way they work together. Old machines with same version PT works fine.

Same thing here on four different machines. Has only happened since new version of PT with the new Macs. If you take movie offline, session is fine. With movie online, you get serious delay before anything happens. Happens with ANY movie brought in.

Did you turn off the count-off in the expanded transport window?

No countoff, and video priority settings makes no difference.

Hit play, ProTools waits. Does nothing for 4 seconds.

Are you outputting through a Firewire video interface to another screen?

I've seen this many times with our Canopus interfaces (both ADVC-100 and ADVC-110's), and it is due to the interface's Firewire chip freaking out. The remedy is a sequence of plug-unplugging. If this is your case, the sequences as I recall it is: power off-unplug all-plug in power-power on-power off-unplug power-plug in power-power on-plug in FW. If you don't have a Canopus, forget everything I just wrote.

I'll mess around with the box itself - thanks!

With me picture is just on the VGA no outputting to any boxes. Again multiple machines doing this. Take movie offline and session is fine.

Eric, I see you are on Leopard - so make sure the CoreAudio manager is not set to the Digidesign interface.

We're working on a solution, but this workaround should do it.

Hope this helps...
