For you to incorporate outboard, you have to use the same channel for the send and return. Example, route out of Digi 192 Channel 3 Out - to Input of first Outboard, lets say a compressor, then out of the compressor, back to the same Digi 192 Channel 3 Input.

You can't go out of channel 3, and then return back into channel 4 as example. Has to be the same. Out Channel 3, back in Channel 3. Out Channel 8, back in Channel 8.

The above are for physical connections. You also have to setup the routing within hour I/O inside protools.
