Default Has anyone upgraded their mac pro 2013 cpu?

Im thinking of doing that this year, going from 6 core to 12. I already upgraded ssd and ram when I got it but am debating doing the cpu. The OWC video makes it look straight forward but what I dont know is will I need to flatten and rebuild the system or whether it will just pickup the cpus and run with it? Any input on that is appreciated.

I am more curious if I would need to reinstall. Ideally if I could just swap it out and then boot up without doing anything that would be ideal. Reinstalling would be extremely involved and while I could time machine it or use some backup, its not an ideal process.

I did a CPU upgrade on a Windows build. It worked great & was a decent performance boost for cheap. In my case I had to flash the bios, but that was not too painful.

I am not a Mac expert, but it should work for a Mac Pro. I'd listen carefully to the Mac gurus right here, plus OWC, Google, YouTube, etc. Get the exact CPU upgrade that is compatible with your exact MAC Pro model (i.e. motherboard). Good luck!

Thanks a bunch

Yea trashcan CPU upgrade is possible if you know what you are doing. Do not even consider doing it unless you have applied thermal paste between processor and heat sink some time before. If you do it wrong, you will melt your processor after the upgrade.

Basically trashcan CPU upgrade means tearing the whole thing apart and rebuilding it from million pieces. But it only takes couple of hours. So many different types of screws involved you better have some system to organise them as you go. Remember, breaking things is easier than putting it back together.

And for the record, my trashcan is 10-core 3.0GHz which Apple never sold. It has slightly better single-core performance and slightly worse multi-core performance than 12-core 2.7GHz.

No need to reinstall software, you are only swapping CPU
